Comments:  Very common in the southeastern U.S., the Southern Leopard Frog is the species most often collected for frog legs. It is primarily nocturnal, but can be found near any body of freshwater. It breeds year-round in the south, but further north breeds from March to June. When threatened, it leaps into the water and immediately makes a sharp turn to throw off potential predators. It usually surfaces well-hidden in vegetation near the water's edge. Photographed at Elms Environmental Center in St. Mary's Co., Maryland (5/21/2005).
