Delmarva Peninsula Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger cinereus)

Below: A Delmarva Fox Squirrel trying an alternative diet at Blackwater NWR, Maryland (12/18/2005).

This endangered subspecies of the Eastern Fox Squirrel is found in small pockets of suitable habitat on the Delmarva Peninsula. It is a large, beautiful squirrel that requires large stands of Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda) away from the competition of the Eastern Gray Squirrel. Two good places to look for this very interesting mammal are Chincoteague Island, Virginia and Blackwater NWR, Maryland. Finding this beautiful squirrel on a country road in Dorchester County, Maryland (top 3 photos) was a delightful surprise.
