Above and below: A Northern Red-bellied Snake (Storeria o. occipitomaculata) in Allegany Co., Maryland (4/19/2008). According to Harris (1975), "A spotty statewide distribution. Very common only on the Alleghany Plateau. A brown and a gray phase are known in Maryland. The gray phase predominating populations on the Alleghany Plateau and occassional melanistic individuals are also not uncommon."
